How to insert degree symbols in Degrees Minutes Seconds representation
Tuesday, 15 May 2012
Minutes and seconds are not an irritating thing while typing a coordinate value in degrees minutes and seconds, since they are represented with single and double quotes respectively. But that is not the case of degrees; we often depend on Microsoft Word or Character Map to represent a degree value. The following steps help to find a solution for this.
For every character there is a Unicode value and a Decimal value associated with it. If you do not know the exact values for you character (this is applicable to other special characters also), you can use Character Map to find this.
Go to Start>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map to open Character Map.
Now click on the character (°), you can see the Unicode and corresponding decimal values at the bottom of the window. If you cannot find the character, click on ‘Advanced view’ check box, type ‘degree’ in the search box and click search.
Now open a Notepad, press ‘NumLock’ key on the keyboard to activate number key pad, hold on Alt key and type 0176 and then release Alt key. This will place a degree symbol at your cursor location.
Either Alt+0176 or Alt+248 can be used to add degree symbol to represent coordinate values in Degrees Minutes Seconds (DMS).
